Educational Profile of Mizoram

Mizoram, a beautiful north-eastern state of India has a rich history of education. The first formal education was started in 1894 by two British Christian Missionaries at Aizawl and the first government school was opened in 1897. The first higher education institute Pachhunga University College was started in 1958. The first university Mizoram University was established in 2001 by the University Grants Commission of India. Mizoram now boasts of a high literacy rate of 88.49 %. 

School Education in Mizoram

The Directorate of School Education which was established in 1989 looks after elementary, secondary, higher education, language development, adult education and physical education within the state. The state is divided into 4 education districts namely Chhimtuipui district, Lunglei district, Aizawl East district, and Aizawl West district and follows the 10 2 education pattern. The Government of Mizoram adopted the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, and based on it has enacted its own Mizoram Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011 which ensures compulsory schooling for children aged between 6 and 14 years.  Some of the schools in the state are affiliated to the state board while the rest are affiliated to other educational boards like CBSE or ICSE. Some of the important schools of Mizoram include All Saints Cambridge School, Army School, Don Bosco School, Holy Cross High School and St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School. 

Higher Education in Mizoram

Directorate of Higher & Technical Education, headed by Head of Department (designated Director of Higher  & Technical Education) has been established as a separate Department as a result of the trifurcation of Education Department in April 1989 with the Administrative Head of Department being headed by the Secretary to the Govt. of Mizoram, Education  & Human Resource Development, Higher  & Technical Education Department. This Directorate deals with Higher Education from Collegiate level upwards including Science  & Technical Education in the State with the approval of Administrative Head of Department. At present, under the jurisdiction of Higher & Technical Education, there are as many as 8 Govt. Colleges, 5 Private Colleges including 1 Law College and 2 Open University Colleges.  The major institutes for higher education in Mizoram are College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Selesih, Central Agricultural University,  ICFAI University, Mizoram, Mizoram University, National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Aizawl and National Institute of Technology Mizoram.
