Elementary Education System in Mizoram

The School Education Department is looking after Elementary Education in Mizoram consisting of Primary Schools from Class – I to Class – IV and Middle Schools (Upper Primary Schools) from Class – V to Class – VIII. Elementary education in Mizoram includes primary schools (classes I–IV) and middle schools (classes V–VIII). The state government has taken several steps to improve elementary education, including:
  • Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act
  • The state adopted this act in 2009 and enacted its own rules in 2011. These rules require:
  • Compulsory schooling for children ages 6–14
  • Free textbooks and writing materials
  • Free uniforms for BPL children
  • Special training for children with special needs
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

This program was launched in 2000–01 to achieve universal elementary education. It provides grants for teaching and learning materials, school maintenance, and back-to-school camps for out-of-school children.

Hindi Education

The state has a Hindi Propagation Wing to promote the Hindi language in schools. Hindi is taught in classes V–X.

Adult Education

The state has an Adult Education Wing that conducts literacy drives and publishes a free monthly magazine called Meichher.
