Education System in Mizoram

School education in Mizoram is offered through a number of pre-primary, primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools. The Government of Mizoram has implemented free and compulsory education for students up to the age of 14. Schools in Mizoram are either state run or under the management of private organisations . The syllabus at primary schools is established by the Directorate of Elementary Education, Mizoram. Most schools are affiliated to SEBA, there are several schools in the state affiliated to the CBSE or NENBSE etc.

The language used in schools in Mizoram depends on the class level and the school:
  • Up to class 8: The medium of instruction is Mizo.
  • From class 9 onwards: The medium of instruction is English.
  • Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) schools: Mizo is taught as a subject from primary to upper levels.
Mizo is one of the official languages of Mizoram, along with English. It is the primary language spoken by most students in the state. Proficiency in Mizo is important for academic success, as it helps students understand course materials and participate in classroom activities. It also helps preserve and pass on indigenous wisdom to future generations.

Many State Government affiliated schools and all the CBSE affiliated schools in the state use English as their medium of instruction at the Higher Secondary level. English is the medium of instruction in almost all higher educational institutions.
